How to Approach Page Growth
The quality of your followers is as important as the quantity. If the people you’re attracting don’t support your mission in impactful ways, your organization will ultimately not benefit from their following. When you attract people with a genuine interest in your work and create relevant messages, they will engage with your content and support your mission.
Your Facebook Page is a tool for:
- Connecting new people to your organization
- Communicating to strengthen existing relationships
- Giving your supporters ways to take action on behalf of your organization
Building a successful Facebook community is just like building any other type of community. How you communicate with and recruit followers on Facebook should feel authentic to your organization or cause’s voice and goals.
Tips to Grow your Facebook Community
1 – Use Facebook’s existing invite tools
Page invite tool – The invite tool on your Page can be used by anyone to invite their Facebook friends to like your Page.
Invite people who have Reacted to a post to like your Page – Once you’ve published a post and people have begun to react to it, click the reactions count on the post and a list of the people who have reacted to the post will appear. If a person has not liked your Page yet you will see an “Invite” button next to their name, click this button to send them to an invite to like your Page.
2 – Connect to your email contacts
Using the Suggest Page feature, you can import your organization’s email contacts and send those people an email invite to like your Page. People’s contact information will remain safe and private. To upload your contact list, click on the the More […] menu and then select Suggest Page. Select the email service you use and there will be instructions to import your contacts and send them invitations to like your Page.
3 – Post regularly
One of the best ways to grow your audience is to regularly post engaging content. When people see posts from you that resonate with them, they will like your Page to see more. Try creating a content calendar with daily themes like inspiration, news, program statistics, staff spotlights, issue updates, partner features, community shout outs, donation impact, or others. In your Page’s Publishing Tools you can create drafts and schedule posts to publish at a later time. Creating a calendar with themes and using the Publishing Tools can help you stick to a regular posting schedule.
4 – Team up with Pages that have a similar audience
Find other organizations and businesses that share the same passions as your organization and see if they would be willing to share your posts in exchange for you sharing theirs. Think about Pages that would want to be seen sharing your content and Pages whose content you would want to share. Reach out to those Pages through a private message or email.
5 – Create photogenic activities at events
If you’re hosting or attending an event, consider creating a way to let attendees take photos of themselves that they would want to share. Remind attendees to post their photos on Facebook and tag your Page. Take photos yourself and let event attendees know they’ll be posted to your Page. You can tag people in the photos if they already like your Page. Send a follow-up email to attendees with a recap of the event and a link to the Facebook photo album.
6 – Promote your Page through your other digital channels
Let people know you’re on Facebook through your other communication channels: your website, blog, email signature, or other social media accounts. Make sure to tell people what’s in it for them. More people will like your Page if they have a good reason to do so. For example, donors may be more motivated to like your Page if you let them know it’s a good way to get updates on the impact of their donations. 7 – Use Ads to reach outside you current network
On Facebook, you can boost a post or send an ad to people based on 100+ different characteristics, including age, gender, location, interests and behaviors. Ads help you reach new people you might not be able to find otherwise. 8 – Invite guest contributors or host interviews
Writing a feature or hosting a Q&A or Facebook Live session with someone who has a significant following on Facebook is an opportunity to reach that person’s audience. Find someone who has a similar audience to your target audience. Ask them to re-share the post with their followers. Maybe a board member could write a blog about why they are involved, a volunteer could share a story about their experience with the organization, or a staff member could describe program innovations.
9 – Engage with other organizations’ Pages
Follow the Pages of other nonprofits, businesses and organizations that do similar work, or work in the same communities as your organization. Through liking, commenting and asking questions on another Page’s posts you create an opportunity for their Page followers to see your Page. It is important to be thoughtful and authentic when you are doing this, not to be seen as self-promoting.
Be sure to like and comment as your Page and not as your personal profile. This option can be selected in the top right corner of the post comments.
10 – Create, join or participate in Groups
Group posts on Facebook can reach a higher percentage of people in the group than Page posts. In groups, you interact with others through your personal profile, not as your Page. But you can ask questions, collaborate and share experience with others while mentioning your Page. You can create a group specifically about your cause or you could create general groups based on interest or location.
